Swiss company EMS has moved toward developing high-performance polymers designed to meet the growing demands of data centers, aiming to replace traditional metals, reduce energy consumption, and increase operational efficiency in various technical units.
Reducing energy consumption in air cooling systems
Fans are an essential part of cooling systems in data centers, as the geometry of fan blades directly affects airflow and energy requirements. Advanced polymers offer high design freedom for producing aerodynamically optimized fan blades. This application contributes to weight reduction of up to forty percent, reduces manufacturing costs by thirty percent, and reduces operational energy consumption by a similar percentage, combining economic benefits with sustainable operational efficiency.
Liquid cooling and facilitating manufacturing processes
With the growing use of artificial intelligence technologies, liquid cooling is gaining double importance in modern data centers. Regulation valves and cooling pipes require a high ability to handle heat transfer fluids effectively and continuously. Advanced polymers provide excellent resistance to chemicals and hydrolysis throughout the service life of the components, while meeting strict fire resistance standards. Replacing metals such as stainless steel and copper with polymers allows for overall weight reduction and simplifies assembly processes through efficient injection molding.
Electrical infrastructure and mass manufacturing
The increasing number of data centers and their power density impose strict requirements on the safety and reliability of electrical infrastructure. Safety-related structural components withstand complex mechanical forces and ensure reliable separation of electrical circuits. Innovative solutions allow for the replacement of parts made of steel or aluminum with integrated solutions that reduce subsequent processing and assembly steps, enabling large-volume production with high efficiency and an appropriate economic cost that supports rapid infrastructure expansion.
