The government of Bengal launched a special nutrition support plan targeting the most needy tribal groups, where eligible families will be provided with rice, lentils, oil, and soybeans on a weekly basis. This announcement came during a government event held in the village of Kalagaria in Jhargram district, which witnesses a high tribal population density.
Expanding the Scope of Food Aid
Around 70,000 families in Jhargram and West Medinipur districts are scheduled to benefit from this initiative, in addition to a large number of tribal families in Purulia and Alipurduar districts. This step comes as additional support that goes beyond the rations provided under the National Food Security plan, with the aim of ensuring that all eligible families receive nutritious meals.
Transparency Measures and Educational Development
To ensure that the support reaches its beneficiaries and to achieve transparency, a biometric verification system will be relied upon to identify beneficiaries. In a related context, the monthly pension for elderly scheduled tribe people has been raised to 1,500 rupees, and 200,000 students in Jhargram will receive a scholarship worth 800 rupees to support their educational journey.
Strategic Plans for Education and Infrastructure Development
The governmental vision includes promoting higher education by establishing dedicated tribal universities in the Bankura and Jhargram regions. Also, 342 million rupees have been allocated for the development of Jhargram district, with directives given to local officials on the necessity of implementing comprehensive development projects within six months.
Women Empowerment and Job Creation
The government plans to launch the 'Tribal Women Prosperity' initiative to enhance economic empowerment for women in these communities. Governmental promises also included providing guarantees for 125 days of employment opportunities, and issuing new job cards for applicants to ensure their labor rights and provide sustainable livelihoods.
