Large parts of northwestern France experienced widespread disruption due to Storm "Austin," which caused power outages for tens of thousands of homes and caused chaos in transport and shipping on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Widespread Power Outages and Severe Weather Effects

Enedis, the company responsible for electricity distribution in France, reported that about 161,000 homes lost electricity supply this morning, with these outages concentrated in the Brittany, Pays de la Loire, and Normandy regions. These disruptions come amid forecasts by the French Meteorological Service that wind speeds could reach 140 kilometers per hour in coastal areas.

Urgent Interventions to Protect Lives and Property

In the Finistère department in Brittany, local authorities mobilized about 250 firefighters to deal with the storm's aftermath, as teams carried out about 200 interventions to address various incidents, including fallen trees, torn-off house roofs, and traffic obstructions. The alert status also extended to the Île-de-France region, including Paris and its suburbs, where wind gusts are expected to reach about 100 kilometers per hour.

Paralysis of Transport and Maritime Navigation

The strong winds caused the closure of major bridges in the Normandy region, such as the Normandy Bridge and the Tancarville Bridge, and strict traffic restrictions were imposed as a precautionary measure. Regarding maritime transport, maritime authorities in the English Channel and the North Sea issued warnings to sailors to refrain from going to sea due to high waves and strengthening winds, asking boat owners to securely moor their vessels.

Rail and Ferry Disruptions

The effects included the rail sector in the northwest of the country, where several lines stopped and operations saw significant disruptions. Maritime navigation and ferries connecting France and England were also affected due to strong winds and high waves. For his part, French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot called on citizens to be cautious and adhere to the instructions issued by local authorities to ensure their safety amidst these difficult weather conditions.
