Sabca, a company specializing in converting plastic waste into reusable packaging solutions, has achieved a prominent milestone in its journey toward carbon emission reduction after its short-term targets received official approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This approval is a crucial step that puts the company on a standard and specific path to reduce emissions in its operations and value chain, in line with global sustainability standards.

Ambitious Strategy to Reduce Emissions

Sabca is committed to specific time plans to reduce its carbon footprint, targeting a reduction in direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from energy (Scopes 1 and 2) by up to 79.79% by 2030, compared to 2022 levels. In parallel, the company has set a target to reduce Scope 3 emissions related to purchased goods and the processing of sold products at the end of their lifecycle by 35% by 2036.

Alexander Masharov, CEO of Sabca, emphasized that the company's top priority is to achieve tangible emission reductions by expanding the use of renewable electricity and increasing operational efficiency. He pointed out that expanding buyback programs and increasing reliance on recycled materials will play a pivotal role in translating these climate commitments into tangible results on the ground.

Tangible Results and Future Direction

Data showed that the company has come a long way on its path to sustainability, as emissions from Scopes 1 and 2 decreased by approximately 66% between 2022 and 2025, thanks to the effective transition to renewable energy sources at its operational sites. Although Scope 3 emissions still constitute the largest share of the company's carbon footprint, the current focus is on addressing them by improving raw material selection and recycling technologies.

Sabca's ambitions go beyond current accreditations, as the company continues to work towards achieving its broader goal of reaching 100% renewable energy and achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030, which guides its ongoing investment decisions in the fields of technological innovation and plastic recycling.
