Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science have developed an innovative technology based on combining artificial intelligence and quantum mechanics simulation, which allowed the identification of thousands of new chemical reactions capable of converting environmentally harmful atmospheric carbon gas into synthetic fuel and methanol, which could contribute to efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce harmful carbon emissions.
A Breakthrough in Chemical Reaction Simulation
The research team, led by Anand Mohan Verma and Ananth Govind Rajan, developed advanced artificial intelligence models integrated with quantum simulation to remap carbon gas hydrogenation processes over copper catalysts. The results showed that the new model contributed to expanding the scope of the observed reaction network compared to previous traditional methods that were limited to a limited number of steps due to their massive computational power requirements.
New Mechanisms for Producing Clean Methanol
Practical applications proved that using the developed model doubled the efficiency of converting carbon gas into methanol by multiple folds compared to previous expectations. The emerging data also revealed an unusual reaction pathway, showing the direct passage of hydrogen molecules to oxygen-containing compounds without the need for their prior separation into atoms, which significantly contributed to accelerating industrial methanol production processes.
Future Horizons for Environmental Technologies
Experts confirmed that this technology, resulting from the integration of modern technologies with chemical research, will not be limited to reducing emissions alone, but will open wide horizons for other industrial applications including green hydrogen production and the designing of a new generation of eco-friendly industrial catalysts, enhancing the path of transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
