French energy company Engie intends to significantly expand its portfolio of renewable energy projects in India, having set an investment plan aimed at increasing its production capacity from approximately 2 GW currently to 7 GW by 2030. This move involves investments estimated at approximately 3 billion euros, representing a real test of the capacity of India's electrical grid infrastructure to absorb the rapid shift toward distributed renewable energy systems.

Strategic Expansions and Annual Increase in Production Capacity

The company plans to add about 1 GW of production capacity annually by combining renewable energy projects with battery energy storage systems. Through this strategy, Engie seeks to transform the Indian market from a medium-sized market into one of the leading and pivotal markets within the company's global portfolio.

As part of organizing financing, the company has applied to establish a treasury operation in GIFT City in the state of Gujarat to facilitate project financing, where the financing structure is expected to rely on a mix of debt and equity.

Electrical Grid Challenges and Technical Interconnection

Expansion plans face infrastructure challenges, with grid connection issues and land access emerging as major obstacles to growth. Catherine MacGregor, CEO of Engie, explained that some projects are technically ready but are awaiting connection to the electrical grid, indicating a gap between the development of distributed generation plants and the availability of the necessary transmission networks.

This challenge requires precise coordination between project construction and the availability of transmission lines to ensure that installed capacities are converted into usable electrical energy at the required time and location.

The Role of Energy Storage in Supply Stability

Engie's strategy in India is primarily based on integrating battery energy storage technologies with renewable energy generation. This approach aims to address the issue of generation fluctuation, especially during peak solar hours, as batteries help distribute electrical supplies over different time periods, reducing pressure on the grid and providing greater flexibility in handling demand.

The company also looks to exploit emerging opportunities related to data centers, which require reliable and continuous power supplies, further enhancing the integration of the generation and storage sector with new energy consumers in the Indian market.
