The Prime Minister of Vietnam has directed the implementation of urgent measures to ensure sustainable electricity supplies for the period between 2027 and 2030, as part of the state's efforts to achieve socio-economic development and prevent any power outages. These directives come within an official letter issued by the Government Office, confirming that energy security is a top priority for the entire political system.
Expanding Residential Solar Energy
The government plan focuses on encouraging the development of solar energy systems on the roofs of homes, administrative buildings, and production and commercial facilities, with a focus on self-consumption. The directives include urging local authorities to develop supportive policies for households that adopt these technologies, as well as encouraging the installation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to reduce pressure on the national grid during peak hours.
Responsibilities of Ministries and Relevant Authorities
The government directive emphasized the need for the Ministry of Industry and Trade to coordinate efforts to ensure the implementation of vital energy projects, including accelerating work on thermal power plants such as "Na Duong 2" and "Quang Trach 1". The Prime Minister also stressed the necessity of reviewing concentrated solar power projects and hydropower projects, and ensuring their alignment with the country's eighth power development plan.
Demand Management and Conservation Strategy
On another level, the instructions included a request for ministries and localities to strengthen electricity conservation programs, aiming to reduce annual consumption by at least 3%, and increasing this rate to 10% during hot peak months. The government also seeks to improve the efficiency of the energy system by reducing electricity losses to less than 6%, and implementing advanced load management mechanisms to ensure the stability of the national electrical system under various conditions.
