Oil prices recorded high levels, influenced by concerns regarding the repercussions of geopolitical tensions on global energy supplies. The price of a barrel of Brent crude reached high levels, while global stock markets witnessed widespread pressure in conjunction with a decline in technology and artificial intelligence sector stocks, which pushed investors toward safe-haven assets such as Treasury bonds.
Oil and Gas Price Movements
The price of a barrel of Brent crude exceeded the $113 barrier, achieving additional gains compared to previous sessions, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also rose. Concerns regarding regional stability and its potential impact on supply flows contributed to heightening geopolitical risks. Furthermore, the sharp rise in maritime shipping costs, particularly for transporting crude from the Gulf region to Asia, increased financial burdens on global trade. In the same context, natural gas prices in European markets recorded high levels, with Dutch benchmark futures trading at notable values.
Market Decline and Technology Stock Movements
Asian and American markets witnessed notable declines against a backdrop of widespread selling that affected stocks related to the technology and artificial intelligence sector. Major indices such as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were negatively impacted, amid investor concerns over rising financing costs required to develop data centers and purchase electronic chips, despite the continued revenue growth of major companies in this sector. The declines included a number of prominent companies operating in the fields of electronic chips, cloud services, and social media platforms, at a time when markets are awaiting the earnings results of a number of major technology companies.
Bond and Currency Market
The global debt market witnessed tensions related to government debt levels and inflation pressures in advanced economies, as sovereign bond yields in some European countries maintained high levels. In contrast, U.S. Treasury yields saw a notable decline as investors moved to buy safe financial instruments to compensate for equity losses. Regarding currencies and metal markets, the U.S. dollar recorded slight changes against major currencies, while gold futures declined slightly during trading.
