The Canadian government has announced funding of $100 million to support the development of offshore wind energy in the province of Nova Scotia, with the goal of moving the West Wind project from the concept phase to actual development.
Supporting private investment in wind energy
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Halman announced this funding in Dartmouth, where the financial support aims to attract the private investment needed to develop offshore wind initiatives and strengthen the clean energy infrastructure in the province.
Measurement studies and electricity transmission
A portion of the funding, valued at $5 million, is allocated for deploying buoys equipped with technology to monitor wind speeds and marine conditions, enabling applicants to prepare for the upcoming tender to be issued by the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board in the winter of 2027.
The Ministry of Natural Resources is also providing approximately $3 million to Net Zero Atlantic to expand models for transmitting offshore wind energy from Nova Scotia to other provinces, in addition to conducting marine surveys to determine transmission cable routes.
