AES has launched an integrated microgrid solution that combines solar energy, battery storage systems, and diesel generators, aiming to provide continuous and reliable power for mines located in remote areas far from traditional power grid infrastructure.

The new system relies on an intelligent power management system that precisely coordinates solar power generation, battery discharge, diesel reserves, and various mine loads. This coordination aims to reduce diesel fuel consumption, decrease emissions and operational costs associated with transportation, while maintaining the continuity of production operations in isolated locations such as deserts and mountainous regions.

Advanced coordination between multiple energy sources

Mining operations face continuous challenges in securing stable electricity supplies due to their remote locations and the difficulty of building new transmission networks. To move beyond total reliance on diesel generators, which require intensive maintenance and increase emissions, the new platform integrates solar energy with battery energy storage systems to meet production loads in real-time, using excess generation to charge the batteries.

When solar radiation decreases or demand increases, the battery systems respond quickly to bridge the gap, while diesel generators act as a backup in cloudy weather or when battery charge is low, reducing their continuous operation and improving power quality and operational efficiency.

Scalable systems for major mines

For large mines with high energy consumption, the battery energy storage product can be configured to suit medium or high-voltage applications, enabling the requirements of complex processing, loading, and smelting operations to be met. Each mining operation requires a custom design that considers solar and wind resources, work schedules, and peak loads.

Furthermore, integrated digital solutions contribute to recording key performance data, monitoring equipment status, and detecting any abnormal indicators early, helping work teams reduce reliance on repeated manual inspections on-site and improve operational efficiency and general safety.
