Press reports revealed details of a proposed US peace plan to deal with the conflict in Ukraine, which includes calling on European countries to increase their purchases of Russian gas as a preliminary step to facilitate political negotiations and end the crisis.
Details of the US Initiative
The proposed plan includes the possibility of reopening gas pipelines that previously transported supplies to the European Union via Ukrainian territory. These proposals come as part of broader efforts adopted by US President Donald Trump to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv, which included previous measures to ease some restrictions on Russian exports.
Data showed that US envoys discussed these ideas during their tours with officials in both Ukraine and Europe, aiming to find a comprehensive settlement that addresses security and border issues and gradually restores energy flows.
Developments in Energy Markets and European Imports
The share of Russian gas in European Union imports has declined significantly since 2022, from about 45% to low levels due to sanctions and damage to the infrastructure of major pipelines. Despite EU plans to completely phase out Russian energy imports by the end of 2027, imports have continued through various methods including liquefied natural gas.
Russian Stance and Asian Alternatives
In contrast, Russia has succeeded in redirecting a large part of its energy exports toward Asian markets, recording record levels in supplies directed to China. In this context, Moscow affirmed its continuous readiness to supply energy to European countries, provided it receives clear official signals and studies the commercial feasibility of those deals.
