The Brazilian city of Sao Paulo witnessed a sharp and tense television debate between Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his rival Flavio Bolsonaro, just one week before the runoff in the presidential election scheduled for October 25. The meeting, which lasted for about two hours, shed light on the sharp division in the Brazilian political scene, as the dialogue was dominated by the exchange of personal accusations rather than presenting detailed electoral programs. This meeting came at a time when opinion polls reflect a very close margin in the candidates' support rates, making the debate a crucial milestone in the race for the presidential palace.

Debate details and escalating tension

From the very first moment of the debate, both candidates decided to move away from traditional speaking platforms and head directly towards the cameras, in an attempt to communicate directly with voters. During the session, Flavio Bolsonaro directed sharp criticisms at President Lula, describing him as a liar and questioning his ability to fulfill his electoral promises. Bolsonaro also focused his presentation on the public security file, announcing his intention to create what he called the "Ministry of Prosperity" and launch a wide campaign against "drug terrorism," expressing his determination to classify certain criminal organizations as terrorist organizations according to his vision for national security.

Axes of confrontation and mutual accusations

In response, President Lula replied to his opponent's accusations regarding corruption, stressing that these issues are subject to competent judicial investigations, while at the same time reminding him of the record of Bolsonaro's administration during the Corona pandemic and the resulting large number of deaths. Perhaps the most prominent moments of the debate were when Lula challenged his rival to open the bank records and telephone data of both parties to reveal the facts to the public. Despite the mediators' attempts to control the pace and maintain order inside the studio, the bickering and interruptions continued throughout the television broadcast.

The debate's impact on voters

Despite the sharpness of the discussion, observers believe that the debate did not offer many tangible solutions that might help undecided voters make up their minds. Instead of focusing on economic issues, foreign policy, and structural solutions, personal squabbles overshadowed the essence of the dialogue, making the debate closer to an arena for settling political scores. With the voting date approaching, the question remains whether this rhetorical escalation will actually affect voters' decisions in a country suffering from unprecedented political polarization.
