Experts in the clean energy sector have called for the necessity of strengthening joint cooperation between the United States and China, as the world's two largest economies, to face the accelerating challenges of climate change and limit its global environmental repercussions, which have appeared clearly during the recent period through extreme weather phenomena.

A proposed framework for bilateral cooperation

Steve Westly, founder and managing partner of the Westly Group, which specializes in energy and climate solutions, stressed that reducing emissions and achieving a rapid transition to clean energy requires reaching a strategic agreement between Washington and Beijing. He explained that this cooperation cannot succeed without a major consensus between the two countries that lead the global economy.

Westly proposed a framework based on five vital areas, including energy generation, industrial manufacturing, land use and nature, the transport sector, and food and agriculture. The proposal also included the establishment of an international emissions trading mechanism to help finance the green transition, with proceeds from high-emission industries allocated to support environmental protection projects in developing countries and the use of satellite monitoring systems.

The role of innovation and manufacturing in reducing costs

Experts pointed out that the rapid technological developments in the renewable energy sector, especially in China, which has begun to produce a large volume of solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries, have contributed significantly to reducing battery costs and accelerating the pace of electric vehicle adoption worldwide.

Practical areas for technological cooperation

For his part, Liang Min, director of the Bits & Watts Initiative at Stanford University, pointed out that there are real opportunities for cooperation that allow the two countries to exchange competitive advantages; Washington can benefit from China's massive capabilities in manufacturing and production expansion, while China benefits from American expertise in market design and system efficiency.

Both sides also emphasized that standardizing international standards for energy technologies, battery storage, and safety enhances the efficiency of modern electricity grids and facilitates the integration of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources into the electrical system, despite the persistence of political and financial obstacles that sometimes hinder global climate action efforts.
