Global oil markets witnessed a noticeable decline at the beginning of the new week, as the benchmark Brent crude moved away from the $110 per barrel barrier. This decline comes after a wave of volatility linked to geopolitical developments and supply concerns that dominated the sentiment of investors and traders in energy markets.

Mixed reaction to geopolitical risks

Traders dealt cautiously and effectively with the threats witnessed in the Yanbu region last Friday, which prompted the markets at the time to execute intensive buying operations. However, the markets did not show the same reaction or response to the attack that targeted a Russian station on Sunday, as well as the ongoing attacks targeting international maritime traffic in various regions.

This disparity in response led to a decline in the upward momentum that had previously pushed prices, as Brent crude lost the gains that had brought it near the $110 level. In the same context, the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude traded at levels lower than the closing price of the previous session as the week began.

Close monitoring of supply security

Market circles continue to monitor developments related to supply security and maritime shipping routes closely, amid continuous assessment of the impact of these events on the stability of global supplies. These developments confirm the continued sensitivity of oil prices to potential threats to energy infrastructure and maritime trade lines, leaving markets vulnerable to rapid fluctuations based on the nature of events and the way traders interact with them.
