Petrobras, Braskem, and Ultrapar are studying an ambitious strategic project with an investment cost of about 6 billion Brazilian Reais, aiming to convert the first oil refinery in Brazil into an integrated facility for the production of biofuels and fully renewable derivatives. This approach comes within the framework of the three companies' strategy to enhance energy transition and reduce carbon emissions by rehabilitating traditional assets to become a biorefinery that relies 100% on renewable sources.
This joint cooperation between the giants of the Brazilian energy and petrochemical sector reflects an ambition to achieve sustainability by leveraging existing infrastructure and modernizing it with the necessary technologies to transform the refinery into a leading hub for clean energy. If implemented, this project would set a new standard in the refining sector, contributing to reducing the environmental footprint of operational activities and supporting the country's trends towards gradually phasing out traditional fossil fuels.
The partnership between the companies aims to distribute huge investments and ensure the integration of technical and operational expertise required for this qualitative industrial transformation. This step comes at a time when major companies in Latin America are seeking to adapt to global changes in energy markets, as international pressure to adopt green energy solutions increases. This initiative is expected to support the Brazilian national economy and enhance the companies' position in the global biofuel market, while adhering to modern environmental standards imposed by international markets.
