Energy facilities in Ukraine have been subjected to a series of intensive Russian attacks over the past week, as the attacks mainly targeted energy infrastructure in an attempt to cause widespread power outages.
Targeting energy and electricity facilities
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Russian forces launched 76 attacks targeting energy, oil, and gas facilities, causing power outages for tens of thousands of homes. The nighttime strikes included electrical substations in several regions, including Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, and Odesa, while emergency crews are working to repair the damage to restore supplies.
Volume of missile and air attacks
Last week recorded the launch of nearly 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 66 missiles, most of which were ballistic missiles. The attacks also affected agricultural facilities and residential areas, resulting in casualties and injuries among civilians.
Russian reactions and field situation
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the interception and downing of 1,015 Ukrainian drones over various regions, including Moscow, Belgorod, and the Black Sea, in one of the largest drone attack operations this year. The city of St. Petersburg also saw an oil facility hit by shelling, which led to a fire and the temporary suspension of air traffic at Pulkovo Airport.
International military movements
Following the Russian missile attacks, the Polish Air Force carried out preventive measures to ensure the safety of its airspace, especially in areas adjacent to the conflict zones, which led to the suspension of flights at two airports in the east and southeast of the country.
