Economic experts confirmed that the latest inflation data for September has added a completely different character to the price environment, recording levels higher than expectations amid a slower decline in energy prices and a noticeable rise in core inflation.

Inflation Developments and Energy Prices

Thomas Simons, Chief Economist at Jefferies, pointed out that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports came in higher than expected, explaining that the unexpected increases included multiple sectors that were moving in the right direction previously, such as housing costs and rents.

He added that energy prices, specifically gasoline prices, recorded noticeable increases, along with a rise in the prices of basic commodities, reflecting the impact of shipping costs and electronic components that have begun to transition to markets and affect the cost of production and consumption.

U.S. Fed Stance and Interest Rate Policy

Recent economic readings, including retail sales and regional manufacturing surveys, highlighted the robustness of the U.S. economy and the continued strength of consumer spending despite cost-of-living pressures and rising fuel prices.

This economic resilience raises questions about how restrictive the Federal Reserve's current monetary policy is, as analyses indicate that the central bank may have to consider additional steps to raise interest rates to ensure inflation returns to the target level without risking pushing the economy into a sharp recession.

Market Outlook and Cost Pressures

Market expectations continue to react to these indicators, with specialists focusing on the implications of borrowing costs and supply chains on the prices of goods and services in the coming period, while monetary policymakers seek to balance maintaining the central bank's credibility and avoiding excessive tightening that could harm overall economic growth.
