Oil prices fell in global markets following the US administration's announcement to suspend some sanctions and tariff measures imposed on Russia, which reinforced expectations of a potential rise in Russian fuel exports during the coming period. Brent crude recorded a noticeable drop, while US crude declined, affected by these political and economic developments.

Brent crude futures fell by about 1.77 percent to reach $107.92 a barrel, after having recorded its highest level since May in the previous trading session. In the same context, US West Texas Intermediate fell slightly to reach $100.58 a barrel, amidst markets reacting to the new variables in global energy supply.

Suspension of sanctions on Russia

US President Donald Trump issued a decree providing for the temporary suspension of a number of prominent sanctions and customs duties imposed on Russia, in response to previous calls from members of Congress. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that the administration will use a period of up to sixty days to assess the potential impacts of these steps on the global economy.

As part of the arrangements related to potential understandings, Russia is expected to begin supplying diesel to the US markets and other countries, with initial quantities estimated at about 2.3 million barrels during the current month, to gradually rise to 7.6 million barrels per month. In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern over the repercussions of these decisions on his country.

The impact of geopolitical tensions on supplies

Oil prices have witnessed sharp fluctuations recently, as Brent crude briefly crossed the $110 a barrel barrier, affected by concerns related to tensions in the Middle East and risks to maritime navigation. Analysts believe that the decline in the severity of some sanctions, along with profit-taking operations, has contributed to curbing the continuous rise in prices, with a state of uncertainty prevailing in the markets.

Frequent attacks on commercial ships in the Gulf region led to a noticeable drop in crude oil flows, as shipments fell sharply compared to previous weeks amidst the documentation of numerous maritime incidents. International monitoring of security and political developments in the region continues in light of the ongoing risks surrounding global energy supplies.
