Crude oil prices witnessed a noticeable decline in global markets, following a US step that paves the way for the return of Russian crude oil supplies to international markets, which opened the door to the possibilities of boosting global supplies despite ongoing geopolitical challenges.

Decline in oil and Brent futures

The decline in the markets reached clear levels, as Brent crude futures dropped by about $1.43, representing 1.3 percent, to reach $108.43 a barrel. In the same context, US West Texas Intermediate crude fell by 53 cents, or the equivalent of 0.52 percent, to reach $100.88 a barrel. Brent crude prices had earlier touched levels close to $110 a barrel, driven by escalating tensions and security concerns in the Middle East that negatively affected navigation and the safety of global shipments.

Supply challenges and Middle East concerns

Despite the drop resulting from the US facilities related to Russian supplies, deep concerns regarding supply disruptions in the Middle East significantly limited the price decline. Analytical data indicated that repeated attacks on commercial ships led to a sharp drop in the flow of oil through the Gulf corridor, as the average recently declined to about 8.5 million barrels per day compared to previous levels of about 20 million barrels per day, following a series of maritime incidents.

Political and economic reactions

In contrast, the US move to address the fuel supply crisis and ease some of the restrictions imposed on Russia faced clear objections from Ukraine, which fears that this decision will ease economic pressure on Moscow. For its part, the US administration announced that it will grant a period of up to 60 days to evaluate the economic impact of these temporary facilities. With regional tension continuing, markets are awaiting developments amidst fears of the repercussions of the navigation crisis and security threats on the stability of global energy markets in the coming period.
