The Chinese energy sector witnessed mixed indicators during last September, as domestic crude oil production continued its upward path, driven by efforts to boost national supplies, while refining operations recorded a noticeable decline reflecting shifts in domestic industrial demand. These data serve as a vital indicator of the trends of the world's second-largest oil consumer and their direct impact on global energy markets.

Continued growth in crude oil production

Official data released by the National Bureau of Statistics in China showed that domestic crude oil production rose by 2.2 percent during last September compared to the same month last year, reaching 18.21 million tons. In terms of annual performance, China recorded a total production of 164.6 million tons from the beginning of the year until the end of September, an increase of 1 percent compared to the same period last year. These figures reflect Beijing's strategy aimed at raising energy security levels and reducing dependence on foreign imports by intensifying extraction operations in key fields.

Contraction in refinery consumption

In contrast to the growth in production, the figures revealed a decline in domestic refinery consumption of crude by 8.4 percent in September on an annual basis, reaching 57.48 million tons. Total consumption from the beginning of the year until the end of September also showed a decrease of 6.8 percent, reaching 513.6 million tons. This contraction in refining operations indicates a slowdown in demand for petroleum products within the Chinese market, or it may result from adjustments in periodic refinery maintenance plans and changes in operating profit margins imposed by global market conditions.

Natural gas sector performance

Regarding the natural gas sector, production recorded a slight decline of 1 percent in September compared to the same month last year, reaching 21 billion cubic meters. Despite this monthly decline, the total production from the beginning of the year shows a positive trend, rising to 196.7 billion cubic meters, achieving a slight increase of 0.9 percent, which reflects continued Chinese investments in developing natural gas fields to meet the growing demand for lower-carbon energy sources within the energy transition strategy adopted by the country.
