Drone attacks caused a fire at an oil export terminal and a warehouse in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, coinciding with Kyiv launching a large number of drones toward Russian territory in one of the largest air attacks since the beginning of the conflict.
Political positions and tensions regarding oil infrastructure
The attacks coincided with escalating tensions between Ukraine and the US administration, following criticism directed by US President Donald Trump at Ukrainian attacks on oil infrastructure in Russia, and continued uncertainty regarding the imposition of new sanctions against Moscow.
In media statements, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that overlooking the sanctions imposed on Russia would strengthen Moscow's war effort, noting at the same time the resumption of intelligence information exchange between Washington and Kyiv after a temporary halt.
Satellite communication restrictions and their field impact
Zelensky addressed restrictions imposed on the speed of satellite internet services intended for military use, provided through Pentagon contracts via SpaceX, which Ukrainian drones rely on for offensive and defensive operations.
Losses and regional repercussions
The attack on St. Petersburg resulted in casualties and injuries, in addition to material damage to the St. Petersburg oil terminal and the Ruchei oil depot, according to what local authorities confirmed. In the same context, the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia witnessed attacks that resulted in civilian casualties and injuries.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry offered an apology after a drone entered Lithuanian airspace as a result of potential Russian electronic jamming that targeted military operations, which led to minor material damage without any reported injuries.
