Recent data indicates the continued strong presence of Russian liquefied natural gas in European energy markets, recording a significant market share despite regulatory and political developments related to energy supplies on the continent. These supplies acquire special importance in light of mutual dependence and existing long-term contracts that regulate the flow of energy.

According to available data, the share of liquefied natural gas coming from Russia in the European market ranged between 17 and 20 percent. These supplies are scheduled to continue until January 1, 2027, based on previously concluded long-term contracts that remain in effect until the enforcement date of the new scheduled regulatory restrictions.

Gas supply situation on the European continent

In a related context, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak noted, on the sidelines of energy events, that liquefied natural gas occupies the forefront of gas supply sources for Europe. He explained, based on official data from the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas, that the share of LNG reached 42.2 percent during the period from January to September.

The remaining shares of gas supplies in the European market are distributed as follows: 38.7 percent for gas coming from the North Sea, most of which comes from Norway, while the share of North African supplies reached 9.6 percent, and supplies from the eastern side came in fourth place at 6 percent, including Russian and Ukrainian gas and European withdrawals from underground gas storage facilities.

Prospects of regulatory restrictions on imports

It is noteworthy that the Council of the European Union had adopted a decision imposing a gradual ban on Russian gas imports. As for long-term liquefied natural gas contracts, it was decided that the restrictions would enter into force starting January 1, 2027, placing the energy sector before a new phase that requires restructuring supply routes and securing sustainable alternatives to ensure market stability.
