Global financial markets witnessed a mixed performance at the end of the week's trading, as US tech indices recorded a notable decline, while European stock exchanges showed resilience and gradual increases, amid wide movements in oil prices and major currencies and their direct reflections on the economy.

Nasdaq Decline and Resilience of European Stocks

The US Nasdaq Composite Index recorded a weekly decline of 4.5%, affected by growing concerns about AI infrastructure funding and borrowing costs. In contrast, European stocks bucked this trend, with the STOXX Europe 600 index achieving weekly gains of 2.09% supported by the results and targets of major companies. On the currency front, the dollar index recorded a slight decline against a basket of major currencies amid receding expectations of additional Federal Reserve interest rate hikes.

Sharp Volatility in Global Oil Prices

Energy markets witnessed active movement, as Brent crude rose to reach $109.86 a barrel at the end of the week's trading, driven by regional tensions and anxiety over energy supplies. However, prices witnessed a slight decline in subsequent trading with the circulation of reports regarding tendencies to ease some restrictions related to Russian energy supplies. In other commodity markets, gold and wheat futures declined over the week.

Market Repercussions on the Tunisian Economy

For Tunisia, these international transformations are of paramount importance given their direct link to the energy bill. Official data issued by the National Institute of Statistics showed the recording of a high energy trade deficit during the first nine months of the year, making monitoring the developments of oil prices and exchange rates essential for assessing import costs and public financial balances.
