Global oil markets have witnessed a noticeable decline in price levels, influenced by the decision taken by US President Donald Trump to suspend sanctions and customs duties imposed on Russia. This move is expected to facilitate energy flows and increase Russian fuel exports to international markets.
Implications of the decision on global markets
This political shift has been reflected in trading indices, as Brent crude futures fell by $1.94, representing a decline of 1.77%, to reach $107.92 per barrel. In the same context, US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by 83 cents, a decrease of 0.82%, to record $100.58 per barrel.
Agreement to increase Russian fuel exports
This development comes following an agreement reached between President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which provides for an increase in Russian diesel exports to reach about 2.3 million barrels during the current month, with future plans to raise these quantities to nearly 7.6 million barrels per month. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained that the US administration will work to evaluate the economic impact of these decisions within a time frame of 60 days.
Geopolitical tensions and their impact on prices
Despite the downward pressure caused by the expected increase in Russian supplies, prices found limited support that curbed their decline as a result of continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Concerns are rising regarding the safety of maritime navigation and the sustainability of global energy supplies in light of ongoing attacks on commercial vessels, which maintains a state of caution in the markets and limits a sharp drop in oil prices.
