Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial operations since the outbreak of the conflict, deploying more than 1,000 drones targeting vital Russian oil and gas facilities, leading to widespread fires across several regions. The attacks caused casualties and injuries, in addition to material damage to oil depots, power plants, and industrial infrastructure.

Widespread disruptions in the Russian energy sector

Russian officials, including St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov, announced that firefighting teams dealt with fires that broke out in the Kolpinsky district as a result of oil and gas stations and industrial warehouses being targeted by drones. Official reports confirmed at least one person was killed and five others injured, in addition to damage to several residential buildings. This escalation led to operational disruptions at St. Petersburg's main airport, as authorities imposed restrictions on air traffic for security reasons.

In a related context, the Leningrad region witnessed similar attacks targeting two power plants, resulting in power outages for about 20,000 people. Logistics centers belonging to e-commerce companies and technical infrastructure were also damaged due to the intense attacks that hit 15 Russian regions, in addition to the Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea region. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced the neutralization of a large number of drones during the night of the attack, confirming the continuation of a state of defense alert.

Escalation of the energy war

These operations come within the framework of renewed targeting of energy infrastructure between Russia and Ukraine. These events coincided with diplomatic tensions related to attempts to de-escalate. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had issued directives to intensify strikes against Russian oil refineries following the expiration of the temporary truce period announced earlier.

Field data indicate that both parties are exchanging intense strikes that targeted vital facilities; as Ukraine has in turn been subjected to thousands of drone and missile attacks targeting its energy networks during the recent period. The economic repercussions of these strikes remain under close international observation, given their direct impact on global energy supplies and fuel price fluctuations in international markets.
