The International Monetary Fund warns that the European economy is facing a highly sensitive phase, characterized by slowing growth and rising energy costs, making it vulnerable to recession risks at any moment as a result of any potential shocks.
Economic Structure Challenges and Declining Productivity
The Fund explained, in its latest report on the regional economic outlook for Europe, that high energy prices and geopolitical tensions, alongside increasing defense spending and rising bond yields, constitute continuous pressures on the pace of economic growth in the continent.
The report also pointed out that declining productivity and weak corporate expansion capacity, as well as the incomplete European Union single market, represent major obstacles to enhancing companies' competitiveness and their access to major markets.
The Necessity of Structural Reforms and Energy Transition
The report stressed that temporary protectionist policies do not constitute a sustainable solution to face global challenges and raw material prices, calling instead for the implementation of comprehensive structural reforms, including the removal of bureaucratic barriers and completing the single market.
It also emphasized the importance of accelerating the pace of transition towards renewable energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, mitigate the repercussions of regional energy crises, alongside investing in human capital to transform the workforce towards high-value-added sectors.
Inflationary Pressures and Financial Stability Risks
Despite the relative decline in crude oil prices, natural gas and refined product prices still hover at high levels, keeping inflationary pressures above targets for a longer period.
In this context, the need highlights to continue tight monetary policies, avoid expansionary fiscal policies that might fuel inflation, while directing energy support exclusively to the most needy groups, in addition to monitoring potential risks to financial stability and the non-bank financial system.
