Gold prices recorded a noticeable decline at the close of today's trading, continuing to drop for the second consecutive session, affected by escalating global concerns regarding inflation and the market's anticipation of upcoming monetary policy decisions. The precious metal's losses reached more than $17 per ounce amidst fluctuations in global financial markets.
Market Movements and Fed Impact
Gold futures for December delivery declined by 0.4%, settling at $4142.60 per ounce, while spot gold prices saw a decrease of 0.38% to reach $4124.90 per ounce. This decline comes as investors await next week's Federal Reserve meeting, where market participants are looking for clearer signals regarding the future path of interest rates.
Trader expectations via the FedWatch tool indicate an 82% probability that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged at the next meeting, while expectations still lean towards a rate hike in December by up to 89%. Rising interest rates usually put pressure on gold prices, given the increased opportunity cost of holding the metal, which does not generate a periodic return.
Performance of Other Precious Metals
In terms of other metals, silver recorded a noticeable rise in spot trading by 1.36% to reach $57.85 per ounce, and platinum rose by 1% to reach $1658.41 per ounce. Conversely, palladium recorded a decline of 1.16% to reach $1106.5 per ounce. These changes occur amidst a slight decline in the US Dollar index by 0.26% against a basket of major currencies, which provided limited support for some metals against other market pressures.
Market Analysis
Financial market experts believe that current price dynamics may witness significant movements regardless of central bank decisions, with the possibility of an initial positive reaction for gold if the Fed moves to stabilize rates. Geopolitical tensions and oil price fluctuations also play a pivotal role in determining investors' risk appetite, as gold is considered a safe haven that is directly affected by global inflation rates and geopolitical developments that may impact macroeconomic stability.
