Understanding the fundamental architecture of automated control systems represents a crucial step in securing industrial infrastructures, as recent technical research sheds light on the operating environment of open-source software counterparts such as the OpenPLC operating system to examine their architectural interactions.

Exploring Architecture and Operating Environment

Technical research aims to examine the operational layers of programmable logic control systems, known for short as PLCs, to evaluate the interaction between code and its surrounding environment. The examination focuses on the fourth version of the open operating system inside isolated environments using containerization technology, allowing for precise monitoring of processes, local communications, and data transfer channels without affecting actual production systems.

Process Analysis and Network Communications

Initial process inspection results showed several key components operating simultaneously, including web management applications, operational supervision programs, and core execution processes. Local communication interfaces and communication channels were also identified, in addition to examining network ports and associated services within the virtual environment to document an accurate reference point for future testing and to assess communication readiness.

Resource Management and Recovery State

Technical studies included evaluating system permissions, available resources, and the level of access to memory and supporting software libraries such as components specific to industrial communication protocols. The system's response was also tested when one of the main processes stopped unexpectedly, where recovery mechanisms included attempts to restart the processes, while monitoring challenges associated with loading the necessary software libraries to restore full operational status.
