The Indian Jamnagar refinery is leading the global energy scene as the largest single-location crude oil refinery in the world, which has attracted the attention of major powers and made it a key stop for visits by international officials to discuss prospects for cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector.

Unique capabilities put Jamnagar at the forefront of global refineries

India enjoys a wide network of numerous oil refineries distributed across about a dozen cities and regions throughout the country, as these facilities contribute to meeting local demand and providing petroleum products such as fuel and diesel. However, the Jamnagar refinery, belonging to Reliance Industries, has emerged as a central axis for diplomatic discussions and the interest of the US administration, in light of the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the facility. This interest is due to the enormous capabilities possessed by the refinery, whose first cornerstone was laid by the late founder Dhirubhai Ambani to become a milestone in the global energy market.

Strategic factors increasing the refinery's importance

The Jamnagar refinery is characterized by several key features that give it a qualitative superiority; first, its massive capacity to process huge amounts of oil, as the two refining units in the complex constitute more than a quarter of the total operational capacity in India, with a total processing capacity of nearly one million four hundred thousand barrels per day, representing about one and a half percent of global refining capacity. Second, the operational division of the complex between two units; the first was established to cover local needs, and the second is dedicated to export abroad. Third, the refinery enjoys a high complexity index that allows it to deal with heavy crudes and crudes containing a high percentage of impurities and sulfur, which are types that traditional refineries cannot easily process, as the facility has succeeded in processing more than two hundred and sixteen different types of crude oil.

In the context of future cooperation, estimates and energy sector data indicate US endeavors to direct more heavy crude oil exports towards high-efficiency refining centers in India, most notably Reliance facilities, in a way that achieves the mutual interests of both parties in securing supplies and exploiting maximum oil refining capacities to achieve the highest added value for products in global markets.
