The European Parliament voted in favor of postponing the implementation of stricter environmental rules regarding methane emissions in the energy sector. This decision grants companies importing oil, gas, and coal additional time to align their positions, as the deadline for compliance with the new standards has been pushed back to May 2031. This step represents a delay of about three years compared to the previously scheduled timetable, which aimed to activate these rules by 2027.

Motives for Postponement and Energy Crisis Repercussions

This decision came within the context of ongoing economic challenges facing the energy sector, as parliamentarians pointed out that the pressures of the current energy price crisis necessitated a reconsideration of the timing for imposing these strict restrictions. Although the European Commission had proposed a limited postponement of just one year, the vote by members of Parliament went beyond that, reflecting lawmakers' desire to strike a delicate balance between ambitious climate aspirations on the one hand, and the need to ensure the security and stability of energy supplies and prices on the other.

Compliance Requirements and Legislative Path

The new legislation was previously planned to oblige importing companies to submit documented proof confirming that energy suppliers in countries of origin monitor and document their methane emissions with the same level of accuracy and strictness applied within European Union companies. This environmental measure aims to reduce methane emissions, which are a potent greenhouse gas that heavily impacts climate change. Despite the European Parliament's approval, EU member states still need to formally vote on this legislative amendment, which will finalize the ultimate timing for the implementation of these strict environmental standards within the clean energy transition strategy.
