Natural gas prices in European markets recorded a notable increase during today's Thursday session, exceeding the $1050 barrier per thousand cubic meters, a level not seen by markets since late December 2022. This rise reflects the continuous volatility witnessed in global energy markets, amid broad anticipation for demand and supply trends as winter sets in and pressures on energy infrastructure in the European continent increase.

Trading activity and the Dutch TTF index

Natural gas futures for November delivery, closely linked to the Dutch TTF index which represents the main benchmark for gas pricing in Europe, grew by 3.5 percent to settle at $1050.5 per thousand cubic meters. The trading session had started at lower levels near $1015.3, before taking a gradual upward path to reflect the intensity of competition to secure shipments and meet growing needs, compared to the market price of the previous trading session which hovered around $1015.

Historical context of energy crises in Europe

These new price levels come at a time when European markets continue to recall the harsh lessons of previous energy crises that hit the continent during 2021 and 2022. Although current prices remain far from the unprecedented historical record set by markets in early spring 2022 when they touched the $3892 barrier per thousand cubic meters, the return to crossing the $1000 threshold confirms the market's excessive sensitivity to any changes in LNG supplies or pipeline flows, and highlights the ongoing challenges facing economic and energy policymakers in securing sustainable and affordable energy for consumers and industrial sectors.
