The African continent is witnessing a clear divergence between falling energy storage technology costs and the weak volume of investments allocated to this vital sector, despite the notable decline in global prices for stationary energy storage batteries over the past year. Although prices have dropped significantly to reach low levels per kilowatt-hour, funding for the infrastructure necessary to stabilize electrical grids and support renewable energy projects remains below the required level.

Recent data from the energy sector indicate that only a small fraction of total clean energy transition funding in Africa has been directed toward energy storage and resilience projects. This investment weakness is due to several main obstacles, including financing constraints, regulatory gaps, and deficiencies in planning and infrastructure, which limit the deployment of modern technologies capable of supporting the expansion of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

The importance of storage for grid stability

Experts and stakeholders in the energy sector emphasize that electricity storage has become a decisive factor in determining project viability and the ability of electrical grids to remain stable after sunset, as well as ensuring maximum benefit from clean energy already being generated. With the rapid proliferation of distributed solar energy systems across the continent, additional challenges arise related to managing electrical planning and controlling distribution networks.

Economic and technical challenges

The economic aspects of energy storage include evaluating battery efficiency and their suitability for various climatic conditions, particularly in hot regions where battery performance may decline over time. Challenges also include financing costs, import duties, and shipping fees, in addition to studying emerging technologies such as long-term storage solutions and their potential impacts on mineral value chains on the African continent.
