The Bulgarian capital, Sofia, witnessed an emergency landing of a flight heading from the city of Tel Aviv to the Austrian capital, Vienna, following the receipt of a report about a bomb threat on board the plane. Bulgarian authorities took immediate security measures to ensure the safety of everyone on board the flight, which was carrying 51 passengers in addition to a crew of 6 members.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport confirmed that the plane, an Airbus A320, landed safely at Sofia Airport after being diverted from its original flight path. Immediately upon receiving the threat report, which was reported by a crew member, the Bulgarian Air Force responded by sending a MiG-29 fighter jet to provide the necessary security escort for the plane until it reached the airport runway safely, a standard procedure followed in emergency cases to ensure airspace security and protect passengers.
Following the landing, all passengers and crew members were evacuated safely, as the competent authorities initiated comprehensive inspection operations of the plane to ensure it was free of any threats, with a crisis response team formed to manage the situation and investigate the circumstances of the incident. Data issued by flight tracking indicated that the plane had squawked the general emergency code (7700) before landing, which is the internationally followed procedure for reporting emergencies requiring urgent intervention.
Official efforts continue in Bulgaria to determine the details of the security threat, as all data and information related to the flight are currently being examined. Necessary arrangements are scheduled to be made to transfer passengers to their final destination via alternative flights as soon as security investigations are completed and it is ensured that all required safety standards for resuming operations are met.
