The West Virginia Motor Speedway witnessed great excitement during the 2026 Lucas Oil Dirt Track World Championship final, where driver Ricky Thornton Jr. managed to clinch first place after a race filled with competition and dramatic turns. Thornton secured the title after leading the final stages of the 100-lap race, earning him a cash prize of $100,000 and boosting his winning record in this prestigious series.
The race was trending in favor of driver Hudson O'Neal, who dominated most of the competition, but his collision with the outer wall on lap 76 damaged the front of his car and noticeably hindered his performance, opening the door for Thornton to regain the lead and maintain it until the finish line. This victory marks Thornton's fourth consecutive win in the Lucas Oil series and his second title in the Dirt Track World Championship after his first win in 2021.
In a related context, the event saw a new season champion crowned, as driver Brandon Sheppard secured the Lucas Oil racing championship title after finishing second in the race, just behind Thornton. Sheppard managed to maintain his consistency throughout the race, outperforming his direct rival in the general standings, Devin Moran, who finished third. This performance provided Sheppard with enough points to secure his first title in the series, after successfully neutralizing Moran's attempts to narrow the gap, concluding the season with a great success that reflects the high competitiveness witnessed in dirt track racing.
