Data management in digital oil fields represents a fundamental pillar for technological transformation in the petroleum industry, contributing to reducing production costs by up to 20% through the expansion of digital technologies to process massive operational, geological, and geophysical data.

The Concept of Data Management and the Difference Between It and Engineering

Data management in digital fields relies on creating an integrated system that deals with data throughout its lifecycle, starting from collection via sensors and equipment, all the way to storage and analysis to support decision-making. While data engineering focuses on the technical side and designing the infrastructure for transmitting and processing data, data management focuses on quality, governance, security, ensuring the accuracy of information, and access permissions.

Workflow Stages in Digital Fields

The data management process takes place across three main phases: it begins with collecting data from sensors that monitor pressure, temperature, and flow rates; followed by the processing and storage stage inside digital warehouses subject to governance rules; and concludes with the analysis and operation phase using artificial intelligence and digital twin models to improve the reliability of results.

Egypt's Efforts in Digitizing Petroleum Data

The Egypt Exploration and Production Gateway (EUG) is one of the most prominent digitization projects, providing geological data with global standards to support investors. The gateway has witnessed the conversion of about 8 petabytes of geological data into digital formats. In 2025, the gateway's contract was extended with development investments reaching $44 million, which contributed to attracting investments of about $1.2 billion and helped drill nearly 130 wells.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Predictive Maintenance

Streaming data provides opportunities to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning in analyzing well performance, supporting the transition from traditional maintenance to predictive maintenance. This helps detect early indicators of failures and reduce unplanned downtime periods, which is followed by major companies such as Saudi Aramco and UAE's ADNOC to improve upstream operations and monitor real-time data.

Economic and Strategic Returns

Effective data management achieves tangible economic returns including lowering operational costs, reducing risks, and improving production efficiency through the analysis of reservoir data. With the evolution of technologies, data transforms from mere operational information into a strategic asset that supports investment decisions and improves asset management in the oil and gas sector.
