Iberdrola Renovables Canarias has received European funding worth 3.7 million euros to implement an 8-megawatt battery energy storage project in the Jinámar area of the municipality of Telde. This funding comes as part of efforts to enhance renewable energy infrastructure and support the stability of electricity grids in the region.

Details of the Energy Storage Project

The General Directorate of Environmental Quality of the Government of the Canary Islands has issued its environmental report regarding the 8-megawatt Marzagán battery energy storage system project. The project will be implemented in the Cañada de los Perros area in the municipality of Telde, relying on battery energy storage systems technology, known by the abbreviation BESS.

This grant will be funded through the European Recovery and Resilience Facility. The project aims primarily to increase the operational flexibility of the electrical system by storing energy during periods of high production, then pumping it into the grid during peak times and high demand, which supports the integration of renewable energy sources and contributes to grid efficiency and stability.

Interconnection and Electrical Grid Mechanism

The stored energy will be transferred to a conversion center via an underground 20-kilovolt grid. From there, it will be discharged via a power line connected to an existing and already utilized substation, namely the SET Marzagán substation, facilitating the process of connecting energy to the local grid.

Battery storage systems are considered one of the vital technologies that help integrate renewable energy sources and develop a sustainable electrical economy. They allow systems to stabilize grids and reduce carbon emissions by integrating batteries with advanced software and hardware tools to manage electricity supplies and improve overall operational efficiency in accordance with modern energy sector trends.
