Oil prices fell during trading on Monday, influenced by expectations of higher Russian fuel supplies in global markets, following a US decision to exempt Russia from certain sanctions and customs duties. This decline comes after prices recorded high levels at the end of last week due to geopolitical tensions and global energy supply concerns.

Brent crude futures fell significantly, settling below previous closing levels that had touched their highest peak in several months, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude recorded a relative decline. This move followed the signing of an executive order exempting Russia from major sanctions and tariffs associated with legislative laws aimed at pressuring Moscow.

Assessing the economic impact of the exemptions

The US administration indicated that the coming period will see a careful study to evaluate the economic repercussions of these exemptions, which followed understandings between Washington and Moscow regarding the export of petroleum products such as diesel to the US market. In return, this move has sparked mixed reactions, with regional parties expressing concern about the implications of these policies on market stability and pressure.

Supply concerns and geopolitical tensions

Despite the recent decline in prices, markets remain extremely cautious regarding security developments in production regions and vital waterways, particularly in the Middle East. Prices had briefly touched record highs due to concerns regarding the safety of international navigation and its potential impact on the stability of global energy flows in the near term.
