Global commodity markets witnessed mixed performance at the start of the week's trading, as oil prices recorded a notable decline affected by expectations of increased Russian export fuel supplies, while gold prices rose supported by a decline in expectations regarding the US central bank raising interest rates soon.

Oil price decline and the impact of new data

Oil prices fell in global markets following developments related to tariff exemptions and sanctions on Russia, which may pave the way for larger quantities of Russian fuel to flow into international markets. Benchmark Brent crude contracts recorded a relative decline compared to their previous high levels, while US West Texas Intermediate crude saw a limited decline as traders reassessed supply and demand balances and the expected volume of supply in the markets during the coming phase.

Gold rise and the implications of interest rate policy

On the other hand, gold prices opened the week's trading higher after dealers reduced their bets on the Federal Reserve raising interest rates during the current month. These changes in market sentiment came following statements by Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, which investors interpreted as leaning toward keeping interest rates stable at the upcoming meeting. Rising borrowing costs generally pose a challenge to the yellow metal, which does not provide a direct return to its holders.

Performance of other metals and currency markets

In a related context to precious metals markets, silver prices recorded a slight decline, while the prices of both platinum and palladium saw varying declines. In foreign exchange markets, the US dollar index moved upward, supported by the decline in the single European currency, which was affected by pressures related to recent protests and unrest in France, contributing to the stability of the US currency with the start of Asian trading.
