Oil prices witnessed a decline at the beginning of the week, as Brent crude futures fell to trade below the $108 per barrel level, influenced by a US decision to exempt Russia from some potential sanctions and tariffs that could have restricted fuel exports.

Current Market Movements and Prices

Brent crude futures fell by about 1.77 percent to reach $107.92 per barrel, following their close in the last session of the previous week at their highest level since last May. In the same context, US West Texas Intermediate crude recorded $100.58 per barrel, marking a slight decline, after having reached its own highest level since mid-September, amidst widespread anticipation of global shipping and market movements.

Developments in US Exemptions and Sanctions

This decline came against the backdrop of signing an executive order exempting Russia from key sanctions and tariffs associated with the law known as the Graham Act, which aims to increase pressure on Moscow. Official statements indicated that a period of up to sixty days would be granted to assess the economic impact of these measures on global markets.

This move comes following understandings to export quantities of diesel to the United States and other countries, amidst expectations of a gradual increase in monthly flows. Conversely, the Ukrainian side expressed its objection to these measures, considering that they might have a negative impact, while analysts' opinions vary regarding the time frame and the sustainable effects of these new supplies on the markets.

Supply Pressures and Shipping Tensions

On another note, security tensions in the Middle East and concerns over navigation safety continued to exert additional pressure on global supply. Analytical reports indicated that repeated attacks on commercial vessels led to a sharp drop in Gulf crude flows during the past week, keeping a state of uncertainty dominating energy price trends in the near term in light of conflicting messages and their potential effects.
