US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that it is difficult for India to cut ties with Russian energy sources overnight. Rubio explained, during his talks with the media prior to heading to Joint Base Andrews in India, that India is voluntarily seeking to diversify its energy purchases, yet it still relies heavily on Russian supplies.

Strategic Partnership with India

Rubio stressed that India is a vital partner and ally of the United States, pointing out the necessity of understanding this situation and appreciating India's energy needs before taking any measures regarding tariffs or sanctions. He added that analyzing the impact of sanctions requires sufficient time, especially since these measures not only affect Russia, but their effects extend to include India and other countries.

Global Supply Pressures and the Impact of Wars

The US Secretary of State's statements come in the wake of a step taken by President Trump to lift restrictions related to the sale of Russian fuel, a law that allowed for the imposition of tariffs of up to 100% on goods coming from the top 5 countries importing Russian oil and gas, including India and China.

Rubio pointed out that the US administration takes changing geopolitical conditions into account, especially with the pressures facing global energy supplies. He explained that these pressures result from several factors, including attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Houthis, and the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine targeting energy infrastructure, which directly reflects on global prices.
