French energy giant has begun expansion works on the Hazelwood battery energy storage project in the Australian state of Victoria, following the successful achievement of financial close and the project securing the necessary electricity transmission license to utilize existing grid infrastructure. This ambitious project comes within broader plans to enhance renewable energy infrastructure and transform the site of old coal mines into a leading clean energy hub.
Details of the Battery Project Expansion
The Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources announced formal government approval for the electricity transmission license application for the Hazelwood battery expansion project. With the completion of the project's financial close, the French company gave the green light for actual construction works aimed at doubling the energy capacity and tripling the storage capacity compared to the current status, adding significant storage capacity to the regional electricity grid.
Transition Towards Renewable Energy and Sustainability
It is worth noting that the original Hazelwood battery project was established at the site of the former power station and adjacent coal mines, which were classified as one of the most polluting facilities in the country before being permanently closed. The new expansion contributes to adding massive capacities that support the local electricity grid and effectively help the state achieve its strategic goals in energy transition and emission reduction. All expansion works are expected to be completed by 2028, contributing to the creation of hundreds of new jobs in the construction sector and supporting the local economy through investment in sustainable energy storage solutions that ensure supply stability.
