American private equity firm KKR is planning to pump massive financial investments exceeding 2.6 billion RMB into the renewable energy sector of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) in India. This funding move aims to support future expansion, reduce debt, and enhance green energy projects.
Details of the Anticipated Investment
These proposed investments are scheduled to be directed straight to Gentari Renewable India, the renewable energy arm of Gentari Sdn Bhd, which is owned by Petronas. Reports indicate that this funding will not grant KKR an immediate equity stake at this stage, but it will give them the option to acquire a future stake depending on developments.
Clean Energy and Green Hydrogen Projects
These funds will contribute to supporting Gentari's renewable energy and green hydrogen projects, alongside funding potential acquisitions of stakes in existing joint ventures within the Indian market. Gentari Renewable India has previously executed prominent expansion deals, including the acquisition of a 1.6 GW solar and wind energy portfolio from Brookfield Asset Management, in addition to purchasing an operational 185 MW solar portfolio from Fortum and its partners.
Broad Cooperation and Strategic Partnerships
Gentari has formed multiple partnerships with major companies to develop solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects, as well as cooperation to produce clean hydrogen and ammonia. The anticipated investment will significantly expand KKR's presence in the Indian renewable energy sector, where the company has previous investments in renewable energy projects and power transmission assets in India.
