Global oil markets saw a notable decline in prices during the session on October 19, 2026, following a US decision to open the door for new flows of Russian supplies into the international market. This shift came after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order easing some sanctions imposed on Russia, sparking speculation about an increase in global fuel supply.

Impact of political developments on prices

The US decision led to an immediate decline in Brent crude futures by $1.43, or 1.3%, bringing the price per barrel to $108.43, while West Texas Intermediate recorded a decline of 53 cents, or 0.52%, settling at $100.88 per barrel. These movements come after Brent prices had touched the $110 per barrel mark earlier in the week, the highest level since May 2026.

Middle East tensions and supply risks

Despite the downward pressure caused by Russian supplies, oil prices maintained their levels due to increasing concerns regarding the security of maritime navigation in the Middle East. Data analytics firm "Kpler" estimates indicate a sharp decline in oil flows through the Gulf, with the weekly rate dropping to about 8.5 million barrels per day, compared to an average exceeding 20 million barrels per day in previous weeks, against the backdrop of repeated attacks on commercial tankers.

Implications of regulatory changes

The new US measures include granting a period of up to 60 days to evaluate the economic impact resulting from this easing of sanctions and tariffs, which aims to facilitate Russian gas deals. At the same time, the geopolitical situation in the region remains turbulent, with security threats linked to escalation in vital shipping lanes, keeping markets in a state of constant anticipation of any additional fluctuations that could reshape global supply and demand balances in the coming period.
