Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has issued official directives to carry out a comprehensive reform of the state-owned electricity company (PT PLN), with the aim of enhancing its operational efficiency and accelerating the pace of implementing an ambitious national program aimed at deploying 100 GW of solar energy over the next three years. This came following a meeting held by the President with several ministers and company representatives to discuss the new transformation roadmap, which seeks to turn the company's business model into a more flexible and sustainable one.

These steps come at a time when the management of (PT PLN) is witnessing fundamental changes, as Suso Isnandar has taken office as the new CEO of the company, amidst anticipation for his role in leading the organization toward a new phase of reliance on renewable energy sources. Government officials explained that the targeted transformation is not limited to increasing the production capacity of clean energy only, but extends to include reducing reliance on government subsidies, improving productivity, and ensuring the stability of the electrical grid in various Indonesian provinces.

For its part, the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), a specialized think tank, confirmed that the biggest challenge facing the new management is transforming (PT PLN) from a company traditionally dependent on electricity sales into an integrated service provider for a modern electrical system. Fabby Tumiwa, Executive Director of the institute, pointed to the necessity of moving beyond relying on selling volumes of electricity as the sole performance metric, and focusing instead on grid reliability, integrating renewable energy technologies, and developing energy storage solutions.

Energy experts emphasized that the 100 GW national solar energy program requires radical reforms in power procurement mechanisms and the modernization of national grids, in addition to reducing assets related to old coal plants. These reforms are considered vital to ensure a successful transition toward a low-carbon economy in Indonesia, while maintaining affordable electricity prices for consumers, which places a huge responsibility on the new management of the company to keep pace with the rapid developments in the global energy sector and the trends toward the electrification of transport and industry.
