Grace Fu, the Singaporean Minister, emphasized the strategic importance for ASEAN countries to focus on developing an integrated regional energy grid, as a fundamental step towards achieving the goals of transitioning to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. This call comes in light of the growing challenges facing the region regarding energy security and a just environmental transition.
Strengthening Power Connectivity and Energy Market Integration
Building a regional power grid in Southeast Asia is a cornerstone for enhancing energy security in ASEAN countries. By interconnecting national energy markets, member countries can benefit from the integration of renewable energy sources, helping to balance supply and demand and reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels. This integration contributes to lowering production costs and providing greater stability for national grids, especially with the increasing pace of climate changes that require extreme flexibility in handling weather fluctuations.
The Role of Climate Finance in Supporting the Green Transition
The Minister indicated that the climate ambitions of ASEAN countries cannot be achieved without massive and effective financial flows. Climate finance represents the main driver for green projects, as the region needs to mobilize significant financial resources to support the transition in the energy sector. This financing is not just an environmental commitment, but a necessary investment to attract modern technology and develop the infrastructure needed for renewable energy. Creating a regulatory environment that attracts investments gives the private sector greater confidence to participate in financing sustainability and green growth initiatives.
Building Resilience Against Changes
The strategic vision presented by Grace Fu centers on the concept of resilience, which is the ability to adapt to global shocks, whether economic or environmental. Developing resilient energy infrastructure not only protects economies from the risks of climate change but also ensures the continuity of economic development in the region. Collaboration among ASEAN countries opens new horizons for sharing technical and financial expertise, making the region a model to be followed in sustainable development that balances industrial growth with environmental preservation for future generations.
