US Secretary of State Marco Rubio affirmed that countries like India cannot stop buying energy from Russia overnight, despite their ongoing efforts to diversify their supply sources. These remarks support the Indian position, which has emphasized for months the need for continued Russian oil imports to secure the needs of the country's 1.4 billion residents.

Defending the decision to ease sanctions

Rubio defended President Donald Trump's decision to grant temporary exceptions from the sanctions imposed on Russia. This decision, under the 'Graham Act,' aims to exempt the top five buyers of Russian oil and gas from a 100% tariff, among which India and China stand out. He explained that these exceptions will remain in effect until the administration assesses the overall economic impacts of the restrictions and tariffs.

The importance of the partnership with New Delhi

Rubio described India as an important partner for the United States, pointing to the need to study the broad economic impacts before taking further steps. He added that pressures on global energy supplies are not limited only to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz or conflicts with Iran, but extend to include attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Houthis, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict which targets energy infrastructure, driving up global prices.

Securing India's energy security

The Indian government has long emphasized that its energy policy is primarily aimed at ensuring energy security for its citizens. India has maintained its imports of Russian crude oil based on market conditions and favorable prices, which helped control inflation and provide diversified energy sources, despite Western pressures and tariffs previously imposed on Indian goods.
