Energy markets are witnessing radical transformations that are redefining the concept of abundance and scarcity, as the massive production of solar energy currently raises questions about how to intelligently utilize this surplus, just as historical energy crises raised concerns about scarcity in the past.

Memories of the Oil Crisis and Lessons Learned

Memories go back to the 1973 oil crisis, when traditional aspects of life ceased and traffic restrictions were imposed to face the shortage of fossil fuels. That period instilled in the minds of generations the conviction that energy resources are non-renewable and that reckless consumption will inevitably lead to their depletion.

From Fear of Scarcity to Concern About Abundance

Unlike past decades, the discussion today revolves around dealing with the surplus of electricity generated by solar power plants on sunny days. Electricity prices on the energy exchange sometimes fall below zero, forcing production plants to reduce their capacities or temporarily disconnect solar panels, an unexpected paradox compared to previous technical challenges.

The Shift Toward Flexible Energy Consumption

The real challenge does not lie in the abundance of produced energy, but in the failure of infrastructure and consumption patterns to keep pace with this abundance when it occurs. The modern system requires greater adaptation to renewable sources such as wind and solar, through directing consumption via electric vehicles, heat pumps, and smart storage batteries.

Abundance as an Opportunity, Not a Crisis

The temporary drop in energy prices thanks to renewable energy represents a massive development that invites us to redesign our grids and systems according to the requirements of the era. The coming challenge lies in transforming this surplus into an advantage that ensures the sustainability of resources and reduces reliance on traditional imports.
