The international crisis caused by rising crude oil prices, as a result of geopolitical tensions, has prompted about a hundred countries around the world to take urgent measures to contain the repercussions on consumers. Governments focused on cutting taxes and providing financial support for fuel, while other countries moved to reduce demand and accelerate the transition toward lower emissions and electrification, amid structural challenges facing global energy markets.

Fuel Subsidy Policies and Their Impact on Markets

Many governments have resorted to providing direct subsidies and cutting customs and tax duties on diesel and gasoline to address price inflation and protect consumers' purchasing power. In contrast, fuel cost pressures have reflected on vital economic sectors, prompting some companies to review operational plans and logistical routes. Specialized reports indicated that the current crisis, despite its emergency nature related to fossil fuels, has contributed to enhancing awareness of the importance of energy security and pushing plans for reliance on renewable and clean energy sources more quickly, especially in Asian and European markets.

Global Demand Decline and Energy Transition Prospects

Estimates issued by international energy agencies and bodies indicate a decline in global oil demand greater than expected during the current period, driven by efforts to raise consumption efficiency and expand the scope of clean alternatives, such as electric and hybrid vehicles, and increase reliance on biofuels and ethanol. Regarding crude markets, prices continue to move within high levels that put pressure on inflation rates in major economies, amidst ongoing efforts to diversify supplies and explore new oil and gas fields to ensure market stability in the medium and long term.
