Gas prices in Europe witnessed a notable increase, as the Dutch TTF contract, which serves as the primary benchmark for the European gas market, rose by 1.69% to reach 87.90 euros per megawatt-hour. Prices touched the 88.24 euros level during the session, thereby surpassing the high levels recorded earlier in the week.
Decline in Storage Levels in Europe
This rise comes amid warnings regarding gas storage levels, as the fill rate in European sites reached only 74.10%, compared to 83.04% recorded during the same period last year. Data shows an even larger gap in Germany, where the fill rate settled at 60.19% compared to 75.92% in the previous year.
LNG Supply Challenges and Global Competition
Europe is exposed to increasing risks due to the potential for cold weather fluctuations and the impact on LNG supplies from the Middle East. In this context, estimates indicate that Qatar, the region's largest LNG exporter, is currently exporting only between 20% and 30% of its production capacity, which could lead to intense competition between Europe and Asia for available shipments.
Relative Stability in Oil Markets
On the oil market front, prices witnessed slight movements, as North Sea Brent crude for December delivery fell by 0.15% to reach 105.76 dollars per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery declined by 0.56% to stand at 97.42 dollars. This comes following clarifications from the International Energy Agency regarding the commitment to releasing remaining quantities of emergency reserves into the market.
