South Carolina witnessed a sharp decline in average gasoline prices over the past week, with the price dropping by 20.9 cents per gallon, bringing the state's overall average to $3.75 per gallon, according to the latest data from a survey covering more than 3,028 gas stations.

Fuel Price Trend Analysis

Data indicates that this drop puts current prices at a level 29.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. However, prices remain higher by $1.11 per gallon compared to the same period last year. The survey showed a wide variance in prices among stations, with the cheapest station recording $3.48 per gallon, while the price at the most expensive station reached $4.59 per gallon.

In a related context, Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, explained that the decline in gasoline prices resulted from several interconnected factors, most notably the suspension of fuel taxes by some states, in addition to market price cycles that have begun to see a downward correction in most US states.

Geopolitical Impacts on Markets

Nationwide, the average gasoline price in the United States fell by 5.5 cents per gallon to reach $4.24, reflecting a 23-cent decrease from last month. Despite this improvement, future expectations for fuel prices remain shrouded in uncertainty, as they remain closely tied to global geopolitical developments.

Analysts believe that oil markets may witness fluctuations in the coming days, especially if global markets stabilize, which could lead to new price changes. With the general state of energy markets remaining a flexible and changing entity, consumers in states that benefited from the tax suspension remain in a more protected position from broad market pressures, yet expectations remain subject to all international and domestic variables affecting the cost and distribution of oil.
